A former 12th-century Cistercian abbey, once owned by the Rothschild family at the beginning of the last century, the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay has been a hotel since 1989 and is now preparing to turn a new page in its history. More than 3 years of hard work have been required by the enthusiastic teams at Paris Society to care for every stone on the property, to imagine every experience, and to create every décor....

Paris Society is reinventing the hospitality industry by addressing a highly popular concept: the country escape. The group never does things by half way, and it is by investing in another monument, this time a historic one, that it is giving concrete form to its hotel ambitions: the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay.

The Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay is a gem that Laurent de Gourcuff, founder of Paris Society, recognised at first sight after years of seeking the place to build the hospitality project of all his dreams. This majestic domain full of history, from the Cistercian genesis to the golden age of the Rothschilds, became his playground for designing an amazing XXL family home in the heart of preserved nature, only 45 minutes from Paris. The Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay promises to turn every moment into a daydream.

Under the talented guidance of Cordélia de Castellane, who has imagined every detail of every décor, the property has turned conventional hotel codes on their head and forged a deeper connection with its guests.

"I think the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life. It's a place full of secrets, where the imagination is endless. It's a place that's full of history, but has survived the centuries in a place that's very much its own, very French and where life seems very gentle. This is what I wanted to convey through the decoration and artistic direction of the project. I made sure that every object, every tapestry, every fabric, every plate, looked as if it had always been there. That the family has, year after year, collected things in this wonderful place.

I want people to feel at home at the Abbaye, to be able to wander from one room to another, to settle down, to go through the seasons, to feel like strolling in the garden in summer, going to the swimming pool, going to the cinema, or watching a film in their room, snuggling up by the fire, playing billiards, reading a book and never feeling like they're in a hotel or someone else's home. For this project, it was very important for us to use French manufacturers. So we worked with some very big names, such as Bernardaud for the porcelain, Maison Pierre Frey for the fabrics and wallpaper, Maison Laval for the joinery, and many others," says the architect and interior designer.

147 rooms and suites gently evoke the atmosphere of a country house. The period woodwork and design details have been preserved, the walls are adorned with original fabrics, and the furniture is either custom-designed or second-hand. Each room is absolutely unique and has that special country house charm.

The Brossier Saderne teams designed and manufactured a number of bespoke light fixtures in their Angers ateliers for the lighting and the Spa & Wellbeing area. Brass-finish wall lights topped with pleated fabric shades chosen by the architect and interior designer provide soft lighting above the bedside tables. Ceramic lamps and wooden floor lamps in a walnut-stained beech finish complete the lighting ambiance, making each suite a cosy cocoon despite its vast dimensions.

The rooms and suites succeed in immersing the guests of the domain in their country home as they might dream it, while offering them the attentive and discreet hotel service that is the hallmark of the finest addresses...
